Périgueux is a city rich in history, culture and gastronomy. Most of our travelers stay in our apartment for 3 nights, so here’s our recommended itinerary for discovering the highlights of Périgueux.

Our itinerary: visit Périgueux in 3 days

Day 1: Stroll in Périgueux’s protected area

Morning :

  • Saint-Front Cathedral
    • Description: Start your day with a visit to this impressive cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Byzantine architecture and magnificent domes are well worth a visit. In summer, you can visit the roofs of Saint Front Cathedral. Information and reservations at the tourist office.
    • Duration: Approximately 1 hour
  • Historical center
    • Description: Stroll through the historic center with its cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. This is also Périgueux’s protected area, stretching from the quays to all the alleyways around the Tour Mataguerre. Don’t miss the little squares (Saint Louis, Saint Silain…), the pedestrianized Rue Limogeanne (our favorite street) and the half-timbered houses along the quays. Our apartments are located on rue Limogeanne.
    • Duration: Approx. 2 hours

Lunch :

  • Tip: Have lunch in one of the many downtown restaurants offering Périgord specialties such as foie gras, duck confit and truffles. We’ve put together a list of our favorite addresses.

Afternoon:

  • Périgord Museum of Art and Archaeology
    • Description: Explore this museum, which houses a vast collection of objects ranging from prehistoric to modern times, including works of art and archaeological artifacts.
    • Duration: Approximately 2 hours

Evening :

  • Gastronomic dinner
    • Description: Our apartments are equipped with a kitchen and a high table for comfortable dining. We recommend you buy a few Périgord specialties from Maison Requier and a bottle of wine or artisanal juice from Chai Bordin, both of which are located on the same street. For dessert, try a chocolate bar from Joseph or Hervé Robin. Then you can return home to enjoy all these Périgord specialities.

Day 2: Gallo-Roman town

Morning :

  • Périgueux market
    • Description: Visit the Saturday or Sunday morning market on Place du Coderc to discover local produce and a lively atmosphere. Taste fresh, artisanal products. We advise you to buy your own picnic.
    • Duration: Approx. 1 hour
  • Vesunna Museum
    • Description: Immerse yourself in the Gallo-Roman history of Périgueux with a visit to this new museum, built around the remains of a Roman villa. The museum is a 20-minute walk from the city center.
    • Duration: Approximately 1 to 2 hours

Lunch :

  • Picnic in the Jardin des Arènes
    • Description: Enjoy a picnic in this public garden, which is also home to Roman remains. It’s a beautiful garden frequented by locals and families alike.

Afternoon:

  • Walk along the Isle river
    • Description: Rent a bike or go for a walk along the greenway that runs alongside the River Isle. It’s a great way to discover the surrounding countryside and, above all, take a great photo of the Cathédrale Saint-Front from the quays of the Isle.

      Périgueux Canoë-Kayak offers a variety of activities to enjoy the river. Walks by the hour (8 €/pers) or day trips on the Isle in canoe, kayak, paddle…
    • Duration: Approximately 1 to 2 hours
  • Visit to craft stores
    • Description: Return to the city center to visit boutiques selling local crafts and products (chocolates, foie gras…), perfect for souvenirs.

Evening :

  • Dinner at Bord de l’Isle
    • Description: Enjoy dinner at a restaurant along the Isle River for a quiet evening with a view. La Péniche restaurant is ideally located for a drink or dinner on the water.

Day 3: Explore the surrounding area

Morning :

  • Excursion to Brantôme
    • Description: Take to the road to visit Brantôme, often referred to as the“Venice of Périgord“. Explore Brantôme Abbey, its gardens and caves.
    • Duration: Approximately 4 hours including round trip (45-minute drive from Périgueux)

Lunch :

  • Lunch in Brantôme
    • Tip: Enjoy lunch by the Dronne River in one of Brantôme’s many restaurants.

Afternoon:

  • Château de Bourdeilles
    • Description: On your way home, stop off at Château de Bourdeilles, a magnificent medieval and Renaissance château with picturesque gardens.
    • Duration: Approximately 1 to 2 hours

Evening :

  • Last Dinner in Périgueux
    • Description: Choose a restaurant you haven’t tried yet for your last dinner in town, and enjoy the last few hours of your stay with excellent cuisine.
