Museums
- Visit the Vesunna Museum: this is our favorite museum in Périgueux. Built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa (by architect Jean Novel), this archaeological museum offers a fascinating insight into Périgueux’s ancient history.
We love the museum’s bright, open setting and all the interactive terminals! A museum where learning is fun. The museum is located 20 minutes from the town center. Vesunna museum website. - Discover the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord: This museum houses a vast collection of objects ranging from prehistoric to modern times, including works of art and archaeological artifacts.
I (Floriane) know this museum like the back of my hand, we used to go there at least once a year as a family, during the big annual game that was organized to discover the collections in a fun way. Today, several events are organized each year, and you can consult the list on the museum website. The museum is located in the heart of the historic center, a 5-minute walk from Les Apparts Limogeanne.
Saint Front Cathedral
You can visit the interior of Saint-Front Cathedral even on rainy days. This imposing cathedral, with its Byzantine architecture, is an ideal place to admire works of art and religious architecture. It’s the must-see monument of your Périgueux vacation.
Test the specialties of the Périgord region
- Take a gourmet break at the Marché Couvert: Enjoy local gastronomy at Périgueux’s covered market on Place du Coderc, where you can sample Périgord specialities every morning. We’ve put together a list of our favorite addresses.

Le Cacaothé and Candy’s café are cosy places, perfect for a short break, that we frequent on our trips to Périgueux. - Visit the caviarsturgeon farm at Neuvic sur l’Isle (about 25 minutes from Périgueux)
- Learn more about the making of a biscotti, by visiting the artisanal biscotterie La Chanteracoise (about 30 minutes from Périgueux).
Cinema
When it’s raining, there’s nothing better than taking refuge in the cinema, where you can catch the latest releases. Périgueux’s cinema is located in the city center.
Caves and chasms
The Dordogne is famous for its many chasms and caves, so here are two ideas located around 50 minutes from Périgueux. You can combine the 2 in the same day.
- The must-see Lascaux IV cave and its interactive museum. This is obviously a replica of the original, so remember to book your ticket in advance on the Internet.
- The Gouffre de Proumeyssac, the largest cave in the Dordogne, will impress you with its depth and geological riches. You can descend on foot through a tunnel or in a gondola, just as when it was first discovered.
