I grew up in Périgueux, so I’m a true Périgourdine, and Matthieu and I love wandering around the medieval center every time we visit. We take advantage of our many visits to try the specialties of the Périgord region in one of the town’s many restaurants.

Morning: visit the old town

  1. Visit Saint-Front Cathedral: Start your day with a visit to Cathédrale Saint-Front, a magnificent Byzantine-style church with remarkable roofs. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city.

    Visits possible from May to October, from €4, by contacting the Périgueuxtourist office. The interior of the cathedral is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 6pm.
  2. Stroll through the medieval center: Stroll through the cobbled streets of Périgueux’s medieval center. Admire the half-timbered houses along the quays and charming little squares.

    Don’t miss the Place de la Clautre, the historic heart of the town, and the Mataguerre Tower, the last tower of the medieval ramparts that protected the town. The tourist office offers maps with itineraries to follow so you don’t miss a thing!
  3. Périgueux market: Enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Périgueux market. You’ll find local products such as truffles, foie gras and Sarladaises potatoes. Every morning, Monday to Sunday in winter: place du Coderc & halle du Coderc

Afternoon: the Gallo-Roman town

  2. Vesunna Museum: after lunch, head for the Vesunna Museum, located in the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Vésone. This museum presents exceptional archaeological remains and offers a fascinating insight into the region’s Roman history. The museum was built around the remains by Sarlat-born architect Jean Nouvel.

    The museum is about a 20-minute walk from the city center.
  3. Stroll along the Isle: For a relaxing late afternoon, take a stroll along the Isle River. It’s the perfect opportunity to take the most beautiful photo of Périgueux with its reflections in the water.

Practical tips for your visit to Périgueux

  • Getting around: Périgueux is easy to discover on foot. But don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes. as most streets are paved.
  • Markets: the market takes place every morning in Place du Coderc, and on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, it extends to Place de la Clautre (in front of the cathedral).
  • Restaurants: Book in advance if you want to eat at a popular restaurant, especially in high season.
